A Generation After 9/11

Posted by Brett at 9:00 AM 10 comments
This blog post is dedicated to all the brave survivors of 9/11 and all the members of the military, past and present, who courageously defend our country.

I know this is a little more of a somber post and probably not what a lot of people want to think about now, by the time this post is published, that the thirteenth anniversary of 9/11 has passed. I know this, but, a friend and I were just discussing the idea of how the events of 9/11 have shaped young people as Americans and as a generation and it got pretty interesting. I thought I might share some of it on the interwebs and voila, a blog post was born.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about when I say 9/11...I have zero things to say to you. You are on the internet, go and look it up. Trust me, there is a plethora of information at your disposal.

I was almost five years old when the world changed forever and the United States realized that we had an enemy that fought with terror, wore no uniforms, respected no borders, and followed no rules of war. I remember snippets of it - mostly not understanding what was going on and why my mom was crying. There was no moment for me when I understood that my life had changed forever, that the world was now fundamentally different. I'm told that things were especially chaotic in DC (for obvious reasons) and that for the capital city, the apocalypse had come.

Our generation is in a unique position in the world - where some of us remember the events of that day and some of us don't, but regardless of how much five or six year olds remember, we were born into a world of established rules and we grew up in a world of fear. We grew up in a world where it was perfectly normal for security to make you take off your shoes at airports and getting the troops out of Iraq was a common thing to see on the news. We grew up in a world that was different in so many ways to the world our parents had known and while some of us might have been alive for the event that changed everything, many of us don't remember it. Our lives are different and our country is different - and our generation is entirely different.

There are so many depressing aftershocks of 9/11 (I mean, the wars...) but I think that one of the most depressing is that now, all this terror and fear, massive security at airports and suicide bombers, it's how we've been raised. We can always hope for a more peaceful, more understanding world, but this is the one we've been given. This is the one we've been raised in and, as a generation, I believe it has made us trust the government less and accept that the United States has an enemy that it's struggling to fight. We've grown up with a moment of silence on this day by default - and while so many understand the gravity of the event, I feel that so few people actually think about what it meant to wake up into a new world or to raise kids into this new world. Or what it meant to be kids in this new world.

However, my friend claims that due to research, our generation shows a greater capacity to want to help, to volunteer, and to be involved in political issues and I don't know if that's a direct result of the events of 9/11 and our perhaps specialized upbringing because of it, but that seems interesting to me. Because of the fear maybe we have been raised with the idea that to get things done, we have to mobilize together, because if we stick together, we can try to change the world.

Sorry to end on a cheesy note with that, or to attempt to handle a heavy topic that is hard to talk about, but it was on my mind and, hey, what's the point of running a blog if you can't randomly post whatever's on your mind. I hope you all enjoyed the weekend and, again, I'm sorry to post this when the anniversary of 9/11 has already passed, but I hope it's made you think.

At least that's not illegal yet!

Have a Brettastic day!

I've been Nominated (Not for an Oscar)

Posted by Brett at 5:20 PM 4 comments
I want anyone reading this right now to take a moment to gasp with horror because - that's right - at this moment I am posting more than normal. Not less. More. This is an historic moment.

The reasoning behind this crazy endeavor is simple - I have been nominated for a Liebster award by the lovely LoveTaraBabii and wish to complete it a timely fashion because, let's face it, deep down I am a horrible narcissist and I love talking about myself. Basically, for anyone who doesn't know (as I didn't until about an hour ago) a Liebster award is somewhat like a chain letter or a tumblr tag where you get told to answer questions, tag other people, and come up with your own questions and it's super fun!

(Also, shoutout to Tara because her blog is awesome and she's super nice and everyone should be following her because she's fantastic)

What is your ambition in life?
My ambition is to be an author (big surprise there...) and one day have a book published. Maybe that's unoriginal or not that exciting but it's something I've wanted since I was a little

If you could only go to one place/country before you die, where would it be?
I would definitely go to France just because I am so obsessed with Paris and literally everything French. It's a problem. If I had only one place I could go it would be to Paris with a copy of Les Mis and a baguette and I might never leave.

What is one item you can't go without?
I know this is going to end up sounding shallow, I know, but I think it would have to be either my phone or my writing notebook. I bring both of them EVERYWHERE I go, even if it's just down the street to my neighbor's house, I always need to have my phone and writing notebook. I don't know if I could say which one is more important because if I leave my writing notebook anywhere I'm afraid it'll somehow get stolen or a giant bird will eat it but if I don't have my phone I feel slightly stranded...I don't know if that's a very generation Y thing to say but I definitely think those are two things I can't go without.

What is your favourite colour and why?
My favourite colour has probably just got to be blue or grey because both are so calming to me and I feel like when I have clothes in those colours they always go with everything and make me feel very relaxed. However, whenever it's fall, my favourite colour automatically shifts into burnt orange or auburn for obvious reasons.

Do you have any pets?
I have two younger brothers and my parents always say they're enough of pets...false logic. I want a cat.

If life had an undo button, what would you undo?
All of sophomore year for reasons I do not wish to disclose.

What makes you different from everyone else?
Um...wow. That is a difficult question to answer without seeming narcissistic (revealing my true nature) so I have enlisted a friend's help.

He says: "Um, let's see, you're a good writer, good at debate (not as good as me of course), you get quite passionate about random things....Good academic. Classics nerd. I don't know, don't put me on the goddamn spot!"

Charming. But I think that sums it up, for the most part?

If you could only drink one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?
Orange juice! I love the sh*t out of that stuff, it's so filling and tasty.

Your favourite film?
Of all time, probably School of Rock with Jack Black or The Dead Poets' Society with Robin Williams - I know both of them by heart.

If somebody made a film about your life, who would you want to play you?
Emma Watson, no ifs, ands, or buts. She is my God.

How would you describe yourself?
I guess I am very unapologetically myself? I get passionate and fired up about things and I don't let anyone give me crap about it. I can be loud but also quiet and I try to be nice but I don't always succeed. I'm a writer, a wannabe fashion guru, youtube addict, blogspot lover, music obsessed, book reader, Latin scholar, Les Mis connoisseur of a person. And I hope that's not too bad to anyone.

Well, that's it for the questions I was tagged in! I hope you guys enjoyed that to some extent as I very much enjoyed making it.

My Questions:
1. Have you ever had an experience with a "fake friend"?
2. If you had to be any animal, what would it be?
3. Do you have at least one person who you think actually knows you?
4. What is the ideal birthday present for your best friend?
5. Where would you live if you could live anywhere?
6. If you could marry a celebrity, who would it be?
7. What is a reoccurring nightmare, i.e. showing up to school with no clothes?
8. Do you have any siblings?
9. What is your dream job?
10. Do you get things done quickly or are you a procrastinator?

1. You must link back to the person who nominated you
2. You must answer the questions given to you and then come up with 11 of your own
3. You then nominate 11 other bloggers with under 200 followers (I very much failed at this part, pls forgive me)

Thanks so much for the nomination, Tara, and sorry I couldn't nominate more people!!! Also sorry that people had to actually read this because I know it's probably very longwinded and dull but thanks for getting through it anyway!

And then, stealing this from Tara, if you do participate in this challenge, please comment the link to your post! I would love to read your responses and if anyone reading this wants to answer the questions I answered or the ones I asked the bloggers I tagged, please let me know your responses!
